Ultrasonic Flow Meter-An Advantage Product

Flow meters are used to measure the flow rate of any liquid or gas. They are normally used in Industries or even sometimes at homes to measure the flow of water. The ultrasonic flow meter is a device which works on the principle of ultrasonic sound waves for measuring the flow of liquid, that means transmission and reception of sound waves through pipe wall for measurement of either liquid or gas. Flow meters are very helpful in various industries as they give details of flow data.

Ultrasonic flow meters are becoming very popular in many industries as they are highly accurate and also available at very low cost as well as able to fulfill the requirement of wide range of application and processes. This highly advanced device is very useful for many applications in several industries. On the basis of operating principle, ultrasonic measurement technology can be broadly categorized into four types:

The original ultrasonic technology developed for measurement of flow rate of fluids is transit time technology. In this technology there are two ultrasonic transducers in a flow meter, which acts as transmitters and receivers of sound waves. The response time difference between sending and receiving of ultrasonic sound waves provide the flow rate of the liquid.

Another technology is ultrasonic Doppler technology. This is also based on two ultrasonic transducers, among which one acts as a continuous transmitter of sound waves and other acts as continuous receiver. Sound waves into the flow reflect the suspended particles into the fluid, this reflection causes as shift in the sound waves. The flow rate or the velocity of the liquid can be measured by measuring these frequent shifts.
Another is the Cross-correlation Measurement Technology. In this technology there are two ultrasonic sensors placed along the direction of flow of fluid. This technology works on the principle that turbulent flow of fluid is formed across a small cross section of flow.

Just like the Doppler technology there is Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiling Technology, the difference is that it uses three transducers. One among these transducers is a narrow beam and other two are large angle ones. They are arranged in a straight line. The middle transducer emits ultrasonic sound waves while the other two receive these reflected waves, which measures the flow rate of the fluid.

Ultrasonic flow meters are favored among several industries as any flow medium can be measured with this device such as chemicals, oils, and other liquid or gas applications. There is also no need to alter or interrupt the pipe construction for different flow mediums. These can also be reliable to work under difficult conditions. Sewage and mining industry and food and beverage industries are finding them very helpful.

So many advantages of ultrasonic flow meter over any normal flow meter make it popular among many users; though it is expensive initially it proves to be a valuable investment for future.
