Want to bring home the bacon in the next fiction writing contest you join? While no one can guarantee victory at all times, these tips should help set you up to be a serious contender when joining creative writing competitions.

1. Be engaging. Capture the reader at an emotional level. Fiction may be readable even if it doesn't set readers' imagination on fire, but it won't net you first prize. Clever and witty may be fun exercises for casual reading, but only by emotionally engaging the reader are contests normally won.

2. Start off strongly. When reading through hundreds of stories, you're going to have to compel the reader to read forward right from the onset. The best way to ensure that is to start as strongly as you can, filling your paragraphs with power.

3. Retain good form. Every story needs to progress coherently and end with a conclusion that leaves you satisfied. Failing to do that gives a feeling of disjointedness, like something is missing. Be rigorous in constructing your tale and you'll be justly rewarded.

4. Avoid clichés. Your language needs to be vivid and picturesque, painting a picture, rather than disgusting the reader with your lack of originality. Same with your story. While all tales only revolve around 36 plots, don't let me smell the ending halfway through the piece.

5. Proofread. After all the work you've put into crafting a terrific story, the last thing you want is to lose because you're sloppy and clumsy. Run your story through a proofreading software before even calling it done. If you can, have someone else read it to help spot any other mistakes.
